Live from the backyard woods · Chelsea, MI

Yes, I actually work in a shed.

Whenever it comes up on a call that my office is a backyard shed, people understandably have questions. Here’s the quick visual tour: tucked into the treeline 30 seconds from the house, moved into the same afternoon it slid off the trailer, and insulated for four Michigan seasons.

What people usually ask first

⏱️

“How long did it take before you moved in?”

Four and a half hours. The shed slid off the delivery trailer onto the gravel pad at 2:00 PM on July 25, 2023. By 6:30 PM that same evening, the standing desk, dual monitors, MacBook, and mic arm were set up inside—running off a heavy-duty yellow extension cord out the barn doors.

🥶

“Isn’t it freezing in a Michigan winter?”

Not at all. Before winter hit, I packed the 2×4 stud bays and rafters with Owens Corning R-13 kraft-faced fiberglass batts and skinned the ceiling rafters with pink Foamular R-5 rigid foam board. Because the footprint is compact, a single space heater (and window A/C in July) keeps it comfortable year-round.

“How do you get power and internet out there?”

Phase one was a yellow extension cord snaked across the grass. In October 2023, we dug a trench from the main house to the shed, buried electrical conduit under the fall leaves, and wired in a dedicated Square D subpanel, overhead lighting, and rock-solid Wi-Fi from the house.

🌲

“Why a shed instead of a spare room inside?”

Physical separation. Stepping out the back door and walking 100 feet to the edge of the woods creates a real boundary between “at work” and “at home”—plus I get windows on both sides looking straight into the trees across all four seasons.
